The abbey was located 505 km from La Chaise-Dieu, it was established in 1061, after the abandonment of his rights by Count Thibaud to serve an older church built on the site of the martyrdom of Bishop Nicaise. It was almost immediately disorganized and robbed by the actions of the simonial archbishop Manasses de Gournay (1070-1080). It had fallen into such destitution that the restorative archbishop Renaud du Bellay entrusted it to the Casadeans in 1090. Saint-Nicaise was placed under the double control of the Archbishop of Reims and La Chaise-Dieu, but for about fifty years. years it was ruled by abbots from the cloister of La Chaise-Dieu. From the XIth century to the XIIIth century, 91 churches were under the patronage of St Nicaise, 9 priories were founded (including 2 conventual) in the dioceses of Reims, Châlons-sur-Marne (Châlons-in-Champagne - FRANCE - Marne - 51) , Arras (FRANCE -Pas-de-Calais - 62), Tournai (BELGIUM - province of Hainaut) and Liège (BELGIUM - province of Liège).
The monks were 50 in 1200, 60 in 1243, when Pope Innocent IV admitted that the resources of the abbey allowed to maintain a greater number. In 1234, Saint-Nicaise had 53 monks, 5 oblates, 9 conversions and 10 converses.
